The Great British Pastime – Camping

I have always loved camping, but rarely do I get the chance. In fact, I’ve never camped in the UK. Camping is one of the great British loves, which seems strange considering our more than unpredictable weather. Not exactly tons of sleeping-outside sunshine… But yet, here we are and a few weeks ago, my friends and I planned a night of camping on the first day of October. We thought we were asking for it. We were asking for it. So Saturday... Read More

Escaping City Boundaries

City or country?! Lying back in the sun, eyes closed with the breeze from the lake cooling me and listening to the band of crickets and cicadas, it’s hard to believe that I’m in the centre of Canada’s capital city.  Living in Ottawa, we are spoilt for choice of where to escape the noises and heat of the city.  Parks, lakes, rivers and beaches spread all over, waiting to be enjoyed and discovered.  I love exploring these places, which makes... Read More

Wishlists

I’m sure that 90% of people reading this are the same as me and that somewhere hidden safely away (so as not to be a constant reminder, but equally a heavenly escape) have a ‘wish list’. Now this could be a list of anything-you may even have multiple wish lists of varying topics (in case you hadn’t noticed, I’m one of those ‘list’ types!) But the one specifically in my mind today is, naturally, my travel wish list. Wish lists come in... Read More

Megan’s Top Ten of 2010

As challenging as 2010 was, I experienced some amazing things as a Go Girl.  I celebrated one year as a writer for this fantastic online magazine with our year anniversary awhile back and with it a year of remembering all of the amazing places I have been.  2010 has also seen some beautiful adventures for me, so I figured that honoring 20-and-10 with my own top ten list would be just the thing. And so, in no particular order: 10. India- ten days... Read More

Zion National Park

Zion National Park was only a few hours drive from our last camp at Cathedral Gorge State Park.  We were concerned we wouldn’t find a camp site, even though it was Sunday.  It’s summer, and all the reservation campgrounds were spoken for.  It was early afternoon already, but luckily we drove right in to South Campground and got a site.We set up camp and decided to drive the park.  Unfortunately, the long road that gives access to... Read More

Cathedral Gorge State Park, NV

July 31st In our travels of the west, we are seeing amazing works of art made possible by Mother Nature.  From rock formations that are millions of years old to spectacular sunsets, it’s hard to not be filled with a spiritual feeling when witnessing these masterpieces.  This feeling was most powerful for me at Cathedral Gorge State Park in Nevada. The only reason I picked this park was because it broke up the drive to Zion National Park. ... Read More

Yosemite National Park, CA

Yosemite National Park, covering over 750,000 acres, was established in 1890.  Here you can see topography that is millions of years old.  What does that mean for the Go Girl traveler?  Amazing landscapes, waterfalls, hikes, and photo opportunities. Breathtaking landscape at Yosemite Just to remind you, we are traveling with dogs.  Most national parks allow dogs, but you are very limited in your movements.  Yosemite is best known for its waterfalls,... Read More

Trout Lake, Washington

When planning this extensive road trip, there were a handful of must-see places we had on our wish list.  Trout Lake near Mount Adams was high on that list, and now we can say deservedly so. View of Mount Adams from our Trout Lake camp The Trailhead B&B in Trout Lake, WA is another location we found on freecampsites.net.  It’s not free, but $10 a night, which is a bargain for what you get.  Pulling up you see the flower and veggie garden,... Read More

Silver Week – Part I

Day 1: Ellie & I depart Shimokita at approximately 7pm on Friday night, after work.  We spend most of the evening winding our way down to the Tohoku Expressway which starts in Hachinohe.   The road is new and relatively empty, and we are quickly out of Aomori and into Iwate prefecture.  We drive until around midnight and pull into a rest stop, where we discover a relatively clean bathroom and an entire room full of vending machines,... Read More

Safety vs. Living: The Great Balancing Act

by Lisa“You’re going by yourself?” These were the first words out of my mother’s mouth when I told her that I was taking a six-week road trip to camp and hike in America’s National Parks – solo.  Her concern wasn’t a surprise, and I was frankly skeptical myself.  Who was I to take a solo hiking and camping road trip?  I was (and still am) a city girl.  I like the convenience of take-out and access to the nearest salon…and... Read More
