Turkey Din Din with all the Trimmings
You will have to forgive my total admittance of ignorance when I say that up until a couple of years ago there were a couple of things I didn’t know about Thanksgiving in Canada. 1-They even had a Thanksgiving, and 2-what they were thankful for. Having grown up always hearing about American Thanksgiving and the traditions and events surrounding it, and knowing that back in England we never had one, I had assumed that it was only America who celebrated... An Ottawa-n Adventure
It was an embarrassingly long time into my life (and scarily close to my decision to move to Canada) that I found out the Toronto was not the capital of the huge white country. I forgive anyone who still is of the understanding that little Ottawa ISN’T the capital. It would seem that Toronto has it all — the skyline, financial centers, the huge hockey team, better shops, harbour front and so on. Whereas Ottawa is far more small-town... Read More
Climate Change
When you're used to the woods, the prairie can be disconcerting. I’ve been a Go Girl all my life. My first international trip was to Australia when I was seven. I’ve lived in three different countries. My kitchen is constantly producing dishes from around the world, and my mouth is constantly producing an equally diverse vocabulary. I’m functional or fluent in four languages and planning my fifth and sixth. You’d think,... Read More
Willfully Wandering
On that very first 3-Day in 2004. For the last six and a half years, I haven’t owned a car. I’ve borrowed them, certainly, but my primary form of locomotion was my functional legs. It made no sense to own a car when I lived in Montreal’s centre ville, and in the suburbs of Philadelphia it was simply too expensive for my grad student budget- even when it meant I had to walk three miles each way to get to my classes. For the most... Read More
Megan’s Top Ten of 2010
As challenging as 2010 was, I experienced some amazing things as a Go Girl. I celebrated one year as a writer for this fantastic online magazine with our year anniversary awhile back and with it a year of remembering all of the amazing places I have been. 2010 has also seen some beautiful adventures for me, so I figured that honoring 20-and-10 with my own top ten list would be just the thing. And so, in no particular order: 10. India- ten days... Read More
Street Bike Etiquette around the world
Photo courtesy of londoncyclist.co.uk Paige Green shares her cycling experience from around the world: Some of the great things about travelling are, of course, meeting new people, learning about new cultures, trying new food – but I always get excited about figuring out how to get around town. Every country, every city has its own unique rhythm and it’s so invigorating to get caught up in the hustle and bustle on the streets of New York,... Read More
Sevilla
After a short bus ride from, we finally made it to the ‘real’ Spain. Barcelona (our home city at that time) is an amazing city, but as many Catalans love to tell you, it is not Spain. Sevilla (Seville), however, is southern Spain’s capital of culture, flamenco, and tapas. I was ready to experience this southern city with my group of travel buddies, and luckily we were all very chill, easy going folk. So, we started off our... Read More
More Zanzibari antics! :)
Another stunning day on Zanzibar island. It’s so hot today — about 36 degrees I think — and the sea is so warm it’s like getting in a bubble bath…not very cooling but still one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen! After cooking in the sun for a good few hours we decide to take cover at a local restaurant for lunch which makes their own pizza…..amazing! On our way up to Eric’s shop everyone wants to stop... Trout Lake, Washington
When planning this extensive road trip, there were a handful of must-see places we had on our wish list. Trout Lake near Mount Adams was high on that list, and now we can say deservedly so. View of Mount Adams from our Trout Lake camp The Trailhead B&B in Trout Lake, WA is another location we found on freecampsites.net. It’s not free, but $10 a night, which is a bargain for what you get. Pulling up you see the flower and veggie garden,... Read More
Adventures in Aomori
Playing outside is one of my necessities in life. I enjoy it for all the physical aspects – the knowledge that yes, my body is capable and strong; for the appreciation of nature – cicada songs and wildflowers; for the distance it can put between me and the rest of civilization; and occasionally for the adrenaline rush of ascent, descent, or finding myself in a dicey situation. But what has been one of the most enjoyable aspects about... Read More
